Dental implants vs. natural teeth.

A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. The former is the lower portion of the tooth, essential for anchoring the tooth to the jawbone, which provides stable support for your crown. The latter is visible in the mouth and it is used to chew and grind food. When an entire tooth is lost—crown and root—shrinkage of the jawbone may occur making the face look older. Dental implants can stop this process. There are many ways to replace tooth crowns, but only dental implants can replace the entire tooth including both crown and root. Dental implants look, feel and function like your own natural teeth—thus improving your chewing, eating, quality of life, and self-esteem.

As regards the procedure, a titanium root is embedded in the jawbone in order to substitute the lost natural root. The implanted root portion is left under the gum while bone grows around it. At a later stage, the abutment, a part that is visible in the mouth, is attached to the root. This will hold the replacement teeth in place. Afterwards, the crown, whether made of resin or ceramic, is attached to the abutment.

This technique is the result of extensive scientific research and development, which is why dental implants prove a great success when it comes to improved function, speech and aesthetics.

Why is titanium the metal of choice? Titanium is exceptionally well tolerated in the human body with rejection being seldom, if ever, a problem. In addition, it is a very strong and durable material, so it provides a stable and long term way of replacing missing teeth.

In order to achieve the desired results, an accurate diagnosis of the patient’s condition must be made. What’s more, throughout the whole procedure appropriate components must be used and a strict protocol should be followed to successfully apply this effective, advanced technique.

At Dr. Claudio Gioia Dental Surgery we use an interactive software application to obtain a 3D representation of the patient’s jaws to ensure the correct placement of the dental implant. We always seek to minimise the invasive action of the treatment—thus providing the patient with a more comfortable postoperative period. The fixed dental implants can be fitted immediately giving an outstanding, natural appearance.
