Elche, lovely city.

Elche is a lovely city located in the south of the province of Alicante, which, in turn, is a part of Spain’s Valencian Community. It has a population of 230,000 inhabitants.

Many years ago, lots of European tourists discovered its superb beaches and atmospheric local festivals. Due to the pleasant Mediterranean climate throughout the year, the wonderful natural environment and its warm, friendly people, many of them decided to make their home here.

Apart from being home to not one but two World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, Elche has a coastal strip more than 9 kilometres long of golden sandy beaches with all tourist facilities. Adjacent to its sun-drenched beaches washed by the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean, the coastal area has beautiful dunes and fabulous natural spots of a great ecological value. Elche is certainly a perfect place for visitors to enjoy the sheer beauty of nature to the full.

The vibrant city of Elche is also known as the World Footwear Capital. For decades, both the footwear industry and that of its component parts have undeniably been the real driving force for the economy of the city.

It also has many facilities including lovely parks and a great selection of cafes, restaurants and bars. It has many gastronomic delights all of its own too which simply must be sampled. Among them the most popular appetizer is the “Delicia de Elche” (Delight of Elche), a fried bacon-wrapped date stuffed with an almond.

When it comes to main courses, Elche’s most widely known dish is “Arroz con costra” (rice, chicken and Spanish sausages with a crust of baked egg on top).

Most of the produce is also locally grown in the rich and fertile garden.
